Musik in: Caprica (Serie) (Bear McCreary)

Die Musik

Obwohl es für Caprica nur zu einer Staffel gereicht hat, gibt es zwei Soundtracks. Merkwürdig? Im Prinzip schon, aber nicht, wenn man sich Bear McCrearys Gesamtwerk anschaut. Schon zu Battlestar Galactica brachte er reihenweise Soundtracks heraus – glücklicherweise. Die zwei Soundtracks zu Caprica erklären sich dadurch, dass die Pilotfolge ursprünglich auch als alleinstehender Film produziert wurde – der wie die Serie auf Scifi ausgestrahlt wurde, wenn auch ein Jahr vor der Serie. Der erste Score befasste sich mit dem Piloten, derweil der zweite Soundtrack, den ich hier vorstelle, den Rest der Staffel – und damit der Serie – umfasst.

Ein wichtiger Unterschied zum Pilot-Soundtrack: Der Main Title der Serie ist hier erstmals Bestandteil des Soundtracks:

Wie in BSG gibt es auch in Caprica direkte Verbindungen zwischen der Handlung und der Musik. Hier zum Beispiel sehen wir Hauptfigur Daniel Graystone, wie er sein eigenes Theme spielt:

Alle Themes tauchen im Laufe des Soundtracks immer wieder in Variationen auf – und da sind mitunter einige Überraschungen dabei. Bleiben wir gleich beim Main Theme, das den Soundtrack eröffnet und als Entwurfsfassung den Soundtrack wieder schließt.

Oder der tolle Track „Apotheosis„, der den Soundtrack als erstes Highlight mit eröffnet – und zu Bear McCrearys Lieblingstrack der gesamten Serie zählt.

Bear McCreary mischt hier wirklich ein hochklassiges Menü zusammen – mit Elementen aus klassischem Score, Rock- und Popmusik, Oper, Kammermusik und vieles mehr. Trotzdem wirkt alles wie aus einem Guss – der Komponist hat ein einheitliches Klanggefühl über die 43 Tracks gelegt.

Einige Highlights aus der Tracklist:

– Caprica Abides: Einmal operettenhaft vorgetragen von Steve Amerson, dann auf der 2. CD instrumental toll umgesetzt.

– I Am a Man und All of this has happened: Zwei Tracks von Bear McCrearys Bruder Brendan, der die Songs mit seiner Band Young Beautiful in a Hurry eingespielt hat. Ich mag seinen Stil und seinen Gesang, erinnert irgendwie ein bisschen an Queen aus den 80ern (ist als Kompliment gemeint, und ja, ich darf das sagen, ich bin Queen-Fan).

– Tauron Ceremony Song: Mit sehr viel Pathos angelegter kurzer Song, gesungen von Bears Frau Raya Yarbrough.

– Capricoperatica: Ein 9-Minuten-Epos, mit Elissa Johnston und Alessando Juliani, wirkt wie eine Mini-Operette auf dem Album und schließt CD 1 ab. Bear McCreary dazu:

Perhaps the most essential cut on the record is the lyrical work for voices and chamber orchestra, “Capricoperatica.” The moving lyrics were written by novelist Laura Kalpakian (who happens to be my mother) and sung brilliantly by soprano Elissa Johnston and tenor Alessandro Juliani, best known as the actor who played Felix Gaeta on “BSG.” I highly recommend listening to this track while reading along with the lyrics.

– Zum Schluss noch Graystone Plays Nomion Variations, bei dem auch Fans der alten Galactica-Serie aus dem 20. Jahrundert auf ihre Kosten kommen:

This piece is a variation of Stu Phillips’ composition “Exploration,” from the classic “Battlestar Galactica” of the 1970′s. I introduced this into our mythology as a composition by the fictional composer Nomion during the final season of “BSG.” For “Caprica,” I thought it would be fun to expand that idea by suggesting Nomion is a composer who also had an influence on Daniel Graystone. Honestly, the whole concept is kinda crazy and complicated.

Auch einige Tracks aus dem Piloten sind übrigens dabei, allerdings keine Doubletten, sondern dann Variationen und Demos.

Fazit

Bear McCreary hat in seinem Blog gesagt, er wollte einen richtig vielseitigen Score veröffentlichen und möglichst viel von dem platzieren, was er für die Serie produziert hat. Das ist ihm gelungen. Beide CDs sind randvoll, und man erlebt von Track zu Track immer wieder Neues. Mal begegnen einem die beschriebenen Themes in diversen Variationen, mal geht’s rockig daher mit Bears Bruder Brendan, dann wird’s operettenhaft mit Steve Amerson. Richtige Ausfälle sind nicht dabei, so dass wir hier wirklich mal wieder einen großartigen McCreary-Soundtrack vorliegen haben.

Das müsst Ihr wissen

Tja, jetzt kommt der „kleine“ Haken an der Geschichte: Das Album gibt’s nur in ganz begrenzten Stückzahlen. Ganze 3000 Stück wurden produziert – exklusiv erhältlich bei La-La-Land Records. So randvoll die CD mit Musik ist, so voll von Informationen ist das Booklet. Jeder Track wird einzeln vom Komponisten vorgestellt, dazu gibt es jede Menge Bilder aus der Serie und der Produktion sowie die Lyrics der gesungenen Tracks. Ein rundum tolles Release.

Fans von Battlestar Galactica und Bear McCreary müssen natürlich einfach zuschlagen, und auch wer an einem extrem abwechslungsreichen Score interessiert ist, sollte hier ein paar Dollar investieren.
